Behavioural Biology: Fortune Favours Bold and Shy Personalities
نویسنده
چکیده
A new study has shown that in the great tit (Parus major) bold males and shy females apparently flourish after rich winter pickings, while shy males and bold females profit from meagre winters. This groundbreaking work exemplifies the approach required for a biological understanding of an apparently common animal trait - personality.

Express yourself: bold individuals induce enhanced morphological defences.
Organisms display an impressive array of defence strategies in nature. Inducible defences (changes in morphology and/or behaviour within a prey's lifetime) allow prey to decrease vulnerability to predators and avoid unnecessary costs of expression. Many studies report considerable interindividual variation in the degree to which inducible defences are expressed, yet what underlies this variatio...
متن کاملShy birds play it safe: personality in captivity predicts risk responsiveness during reproduction in the wild.
Despite a growing body of evidence linking personality to life-history variation and fitness, the behavioural mechanisms underlying these relationships remain poorly understood. One mechanism thought to play a key role is how individuals respond to risk. Relatively reactive and proactive (or shy and bold) personality types are expected to differ in how they manage the inherent trade-off between...
متن کاملHeritability and fitness-related consequences of squid personality traits.
Dumpling squid, Euprymna tasmanica, show consistent individual differences in behaviour that can be classified according to indices reflecting shy-bold, activity and reactivity responses. Using crosses of wild-caught single males to multiple females with known behavioural phenotypes, this study estimated patterns of additive genetic and residual variance in these behavioural traits from offspri...
متن کاملInvasive Cane Toads: Social Facilitation Depends upon an Individual’s Personality
Individual variation in behavioural traits (including responses to social cues) may influence the success of invasive populations. We studied the relationship between sociality and personality in invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) from a recently established population in tropical Australia. In our field experiments, we manipulated social cues (the presence of a feeding conspecific) near a f...
متن کاملBehavioural phenotype affects social interactions in an animal network.
Animal social networks can be extremely complex and are characterized by highly non-random interactions between group members. However, very little is known about the underlying factors affecting interaction preferences, and hence network structure. One possibility is that behavioural differences between individuals, such as how bold or shy they are, can affect the frequency and distribution of...
